Break for the Border - Friday 11th May 2007

A good crowd in from the off in Break on Friday night. Into the singers nice and early and first up we had Mark Walsh (Purty Kitchen fame!) He did a great song by Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire followed by Bad Touch by the Bloodhound gang, and not the Sugar Hill Gang as yours truly said a couple of weeks ago! Mark, as always is a tough act to follow, but Jullee Clarke did a top job as our next singer. She also sang two songs, the first of which was Superstar by the Carpenters, and I think she may have done this once or twice before! Seeing as she travelled all the way from Clongriffin on Dublins Northside, we decided she should sing another one! This time she sang Express Yourself by Madonna, and once again she was superb! Our next singer came from the Southside, Tallaght to be exact. Kayo McCarthy(left), who could pass as a professional singer, did Man I Feel Like A Woman by Shania Twain, and she was so good we would love to see her back again soon to sing again. Our next singer, Barbara Hughes, works in the Oirechtas (spelling!) office and she works in the Questions Office! Any random questions you may have, just call her office and ask for Barbara! Not only does she know the answer to EVERY question, but she also is a good singer! She sang, Simply the Best by Tina Turner and all her fellow workers were straight on to the floor to bop along. She got her friend Erin to join her for the next song. They did 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton, and although they are unsure of their politics, they know how to sing! Next up was a young lady who is getting married in Lanzarote next Tuesday. Mary, the hen, was joined by one of her friends to sing Paradise by The Dashboard Light, and only for I stopped it after 45 mins, they would have missed their flight! Ronan, the hardest working singer, I mean barman, in Break for the Border, did Under my Skin by Frank Sinatra and then Grease Lightning, from the movie Grease, and true to form, he was very good. A treat for all in Break next! James Hennessy was our next singer and I would say his knees are sore today! He did When the Sun Goes Down by the Artic Monkeys followed by Wonderboy by Tenacious D, and all I will say is he got the biggest round of applause of the night, and one or two free drinks!! Phil from Leicester was next up. He did Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice especially for his mate Chris who was celebrating his birthday, and then by request by me, he did Boom Shake Shake Shake the Room by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and just like Thursday, he brought the house down. Gillian Farrell from Tallaght was next up. She was superb at Believe by Cher and with a bit of luck, she will be back soon. Next up, from the pensions division of the Oirechtas, was Fergal(left) who sang The Wonder of You by Elvis, and again, was not bad!(The future)Mrs McKeegan(right), from up North, and dressed as a golfer, was next up. She did Like a Virgin (ironic that!) by Madonna and seemed to enjoy herself! From someone getting married to two guys next! Rob and Sprocket did Gay Bar by Electric Six, and that was, eh, interesting! Patrick was our next entertainer on stage and he did a great song, Common People, by Pulp and was very good. Almost time to hand over to our DJ now, but before we did, we had one more to go. Doing a song that has been covered by more bands than I care to remember, David Carroll had everyone jumping up and down and swinging around to the Irish Rover. We then handed over to our DJ who is still there now! Thanks for reading and thanks for singing. Don't forget, Karaoke Sing a Long, Break for the Border, this and every Friday from 9pm. It's just a bit of fun for a Friday night. Over and out!
