Break for the Border - Friday 16th Feb 2007
Ok, I know this should have been updated ages ago, but we have been really busy since Friday!! Another great night in Break last Friday night, and we had a huge number of singers as usual. We started things off with Vanesa Weidmann, who sang Woman in Love by Barbara Streisand, and a great job she did of it too. Our next singer came from Donagadee (probably spelt wrong, but I think she made that name up anyway!) in Northern Ireland. Her name was Lorraine and she sang Torn from Natalie Imbruglia, and I could tell that maybe she has done it once or twice before!! Our first male singer on stage was Dave, a Man Utd fan, who sang, and wait for it, You'll Never Walk Alone!! Get your own songs mate!! What a duet we had up next. An international combination that would have Robbie and Kylie shaking! It was Emmet from London and Siobhain from West Meath. They sang the Frank and Nancy classic, Something Stupid. Next up was Rick, or Ricky as he is now going to be called, and he got the place going with Sharp Dressed Man from ZZ Top. He was very shy! Our next singer flew in from France to sing. Her name was Sabrina, just like the teenage witch! She sang a song that you just don't hear anymore. It comes from Bjork, and It's Oh So Quiet, shhh, shhh! She did make me a little nervous, but she did something else to Paul (Tony Soprano, The Boss, you get the picture!) who bought her a cocktail! Sabrina was a hard act for anybody to follow, but Kerry from London did herself, and her boyfriend Ian, very proud. She sang Big Spender by Shirley Bassey, and I would guess that this is a regular thing when they are all out boozing! Her boyfriend Ian, or Cord Roy (he has a cordroy suit!) got up and lowered the tone by singing I Guess Thats Why They Call it The Blues, by his favourite artist, Elton John. Just when you thought that would be the end of the Londoners, up pops Macca (John Arne Riise!) Fuller and Tina! They did a song that was massive in the 80's, so they say but I never heard it before! It came from Chas and Dave and it was called Rabbit!! That means to chat, from anyone that is not familiar with London slang! You should go to iTunes and listen to this song, soooooo funny! Our next singer lives in Upton Park, a place full of hammers! He was Aaron and he sang Eye of the Tiger, the music from all the Rocky movies. Our next singer was back in Break for the Border for his second or third time. He comes all the way from Belfast, please put your hand together for Colin! He had all the hands high in the air with Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline. Belinda from Loughlinstown sang next and slowed things down, with the lovely Wind Beneath my Wings by Bette Midler. I couldn't believe it, but Ronan had a night off, and came in to see us! He did his usual(!) New York New York, and then, the one I love, Grease Lightning! There was, and has been for a few weeks, a girl up in the restaurant looking down at Ronan. I think she is a stalker. Our next singer sang the Madonna song Material Girl, and, just like Madonna, she came from Michegan(probably spelt that wrong too!). Our next singer joined us from the home of the King, Elvis! He looked nothing like him though, and when I think of it, he sounded nothing like him either, thats why he sang Garth Brooks, Friends in Low Places! Next up were Robson and Jerome, I mean Marc and Colin(Belfast). They sang Oasis Some Might Say, but i'm not sure Colin ever heard the song before! Kenneth was up next, and finally, we got some Elvis, and it was Return to Sender. We, as in me and Steve, do our best to bring love and peace to the world! Our next singers were sworn enemies. One came from Madrid, Ismael, and the other was Catalan, Victor. We got them to put there diffrences aside, and they sang togther, which was a huge step in bridging peace between the two cultures! And coming from Spain, there really was only one choice of song, and that was Wonderwall by Oasis???! Next up was four girls from France, and one of them was celebrating her birthday, but I don't know which one it was!! They sang Hey Jude by the Beatles for the Birthday girl. At this stage the night was more or less over for us, but before we finished, we got the Londoners up one last time, this time it was The France Brothers. One of them (can't remember which one, too much drink!) was celebrating his birthday, thats why they were all over. They sang The Wanderer by Dion and the Belmonts, and in fairness to them, even though they were pissed, they were very good. At this stage, it was time to hand over to the DJ, where everone had a chance to dance! Thanks for reading and thanks for singing! We will see you all again in Break for the Border, this, and every Friday night, from around 9pm! It's just a bit of fun for a Friday night! Over and out...
